AFLPNG Profile
AFL PNG is primarily responsible for looking after AFL junior development programs in PNG which include our National Player Pathway which leads all the way from the village to the MCG. We work closely with the Senior Football Body which until recently was a separate identity under the banner of PNG Rules Council. In more cent times they have become more closely aligned, with AFLPNG and in the near future we should see both organisations operating together as AFLPNG.
AFLPNG commenced operations in 2001 and currently has a 7 person Board, 12 full time staff with associate organisations across the three AFL Regions of PNG and a number of key programs and partnerships operating throughout the country. The organisation has been set up with a carefully designed corporate structure which ensures stability and the ability to set and pursue long and medium term plans. Board members are appointed by the AFL and are responsible to all stakeholders in the setting of policy and strategy. Financial transparency and accountability are key drivers of all activities.
The PNG Mosquitoes
The PNG Mosquitoes have been one of PNG’s most successful National teams over many years. Wearing the Black Red & Gold in matches both on PNG soil and in Australia they have been hard to beat for more than 30 years.. The PNG Mosquitoes dominated the Arafura Games winning Gold undefeated in 1995, 1997 & 1999. In the 2002 International Cup they lost to Ireland in the Final and in 2005 again lost in the Final to New Zealand this time. With their recent focus on junior development they are always be very quick, skillful and hard to beat.
Junior Competitions
Junior competitions are school based, focusing on the U13, U15 and U17 age groups. In larger cities such as Port Moresby and Lae these age groups have expanded to cope with the increasing interest. For example, in 2007 fifty two teams played in the Port Moresby Junior Competition and the School competition in Lae attracted 20 teams. Other viable school competitions are held in Mt Hagen, Goroka, Kimbe, Buka, Rabaul, Kerema and Kavieng
